Interesting opinion piece published yesterday by Dominique Browning (EDF) about religion and climate change. Her article describes an organisation called Interfaith Power & Light that calls itself “a religious response to global warming”.

She rightly argues that religions of all kinds have an important part to play in increasing knowledge and action about climate change. It worries me that climate change science comes down to a matter of “belief”, but we need to be able to accept that this is so and use belief to change behaviour and ultimately influence public policy.

A related idea is that of the Interfaith Declaration on Climate Change, which in part reads:

The nurturing and respect for Life is a central doctrine of all faiths on Earth. Yet today we are endangering life on Earth with dangerous levels of greenhouse gas emissions. These gases are destabilizing the global climate system, heating the Earth, acidifying the oceans, and putting both humanity and all living creatures at unacceptable risk.
